For all those who still do not know this type of National Lottery, it is a European draw organized, with the aim of strengthening links between countries, by the gaming operators that are in charge of the EuroMillions lottery in each participating country, a total of nine since October 2004: Austria, Belgium, Spain, France, Ireland, Luxembourg, Portugal, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
It takes place every Tuesday and Friday afternoon, and the draw takes place in Paris.
Most countries have weekly lotteries, giving any citizen the chance to become multi-millionaire. The prizes for all of these draws are, of course, huge - but one lottery draw which has a larger Jackpot than most is the called EuroMillions.
First played in the February of 2004, with only French, English and Spanish citizens able to participate, the EuroMillions is a widely popular transnational lottery and has since expanded to allow players from Austria, Belgium, Ireland, Luxembourg, Portugal, Switzerland,... to get involved. As a result of this huge player pool, the EuroMillions jackpot is often one of the largest lottery jackpots in the world – the largest EuroMillions jackpot ever won was an incredible €190 million!
With prizes like that, it is no wonder that so many players across Europe enter each week for the chance to win – here is how you can get involved, too.
Playing EuroMillions is very simple, you just have to select a total of five numbers from 1 to 50 of a main combination, in addition to 2 numbers from 1 to 12, corresponding to the stars. Thus, two types of bets can be placed:
● Simple bets: selecting the number of figures indicated previously, either in one column or in several.
● Multiple bets: for this, between 5 and 10 numbers and 2 to 5 stars are chosen only from the first column. Furthermore, in the column to the far right, you must indicate the total number of bets.
On the other hand, you can participate in the raffle only one day, either Tuesday or Friday, both days, or for two weeks. To do this, the corresponding option must be marked at the bottom of the Euromillion ticket.
The price of each EuroMillion ticket is €2.50 here in Spain as in all those countries where the euro is the official currency, £2.50 in the United Kingdom and 3.50 Swiss francs.
You can purchase a a digital ticket for the EuroMillions draw without extra expenses through our official website or app, you can also subscribe to your favorite combination for a single draw or weekly, which means every Thursday and Friday. You can also acquire physical tickets from our local shop. The cost of the EuroMillions ticket varies slightly according to each country, but is kept at a fairly consistent price of around €2.50/£2.50, here in Spain it is worth €2.50.
When purchasing your ticket, the player must select five main numbers between 1 and 50 and an additional two lucky star numbers from a pool of twelve other numbers. You can choose these numbers yourself or have them generated at random – some players use the same numbers each week, even though, statistically, this has no effect on how likely you are to win.
The lottery draw takes place every Tuesday and Friday evening at 8:45pm Spanish time, the raffle takes place in the French capital, Paris, with seven numbers pulled at random by a machine. The prize that the player could win varies depending on how many numbers you were able to match with those on the EuroMillion ticket.
Of course, a player has to match all seven numbers to win the EuroMillion jackpot, but there are prizes available for players who match fewer. However, these prizes are lower – a player has to match at least three main numbers and a lucky star to expect to win anything over €10.
Overall, the odds of winning the EuroMillions Jackpot are 1 in 139,838,160, however many people have done it.
Now you know how to play, why not pick up a ticket and try it out for yourself?
50% of the total revenue from EuroMillion ticket sales goes directly to the prizes, where it is divided among all those who hit each of the categories, a total of thirteen. Also, in the event that no one matches the full combination, the corresponding prize will be added to the EuroMillion jackpot for the next draw. The different successes that can be awarded are the following:
● First category: the 5 numbers and the 2 stars
● Second category: 5 numbers and 1 star
● Third category: 5 numbers
● Fourth category: 4 numbers and 2 stars
● Fifth category: 4 numbers and 1 star
● Sixth category: 3 numbers and 2 stars
● Seventh category: 4 numbers
● Eighth category: 2 numbers and 2 stars
● Ninth category: 3 numbers and 1 star
● Tenth category: 3 numbers
● Eleventh category: 1 number and 2 stars
● Twelfth category: 2 numbers and 1 star
● Thirteenth category: 2 numbers
Depending on the type of success you have, the number of people who have succeeded in the same category, and the amount obtained, the prize to receive can vary significantly, reaching € 190,000,000 in the highest prize of the history of the Euromillions Draw, delivered four times since the start of this lottery: twice in the UK, once in 2012 and once in 2019, in Portugal in 2014 and in Spain in 2017.
In addition to the Euromillion draw, here in Spain you can participate, with a unique automatic code on the same ticket, the Draw called El Millón, where you can win an extra prize of one million euros and in which there is always a winner.
Likewise, two Fridays a year, 25 prizes of one million euros are awarded, this time at the European level, in the Rain of Millions draw, through a code added to each EuroMillion bet, granted automatically.
